Winter wonderland developing

Frank Lund of the Black Pearl helped out in between finding wood from The Black Pearl all over the coast of the Mersey
Carl Leckey, Jean Benfield and Alison Bailey Smith's snowflakes and stars and donated snowflakes from Rachel Rogers and family.

Breda's painting with Alison's laminated snowflakes made of scraps of paper from making other snowflakes...perpetual recycling.

MAP UPDATE

The Winter Wonderland window has been coming together this week with myself and one of the other directors, we still have lights and wings to add to the Angel of New Brighton (High Viz jacket, waders and overalls and gloves - to immortalise the clean up crews). Many artists have contributed snowflakes including myself and other directors, Jean and Carl. Carl has found new found zeal in creating snowflakes with old posters and junk mail - no paper is spared in their house! Still room for more snowflakes if anyone gets the urge to be creative.

We are meeting tomorrow to plan the "After the Storm" event with the suggested date of the 19th of January between 5 and 7pm... We are all very happy to hear from more businesses who might want to get involved. Glad to have Robin Bird on board with his father's footage of previous storms, poet Clare Kirwan, and some local musicians...but room for more and open to suggestions. We will be using Screen 2 and the foyer space for the event.

MAP directors, Liz Byrne and Shaun Fanning managed to get a few Love Wirral applications in through MAP and with some of the local schools but obviously timing was not perfect (Stormageddon), but we hope to look for future funding so we can complete the decoration of the buildings on Harrison Drive.

We also have a few other projects on the go for some other buildings in New Brighton which we will tell you about soon.

MAP update

After a meeting this morning at the Light with Jane and Hayley and The Black Pearl crew, it was decided not to go ahead with the launch on Thursday and although the Winter Wonderland will materialise over a few days in the unit and into The Light, we will not do a launch on Thursday as previously advertised.

We need to recuperate after the storm and build to a charity event in the New Year, which we hope you can be involved in. MAP did not get hit that badly, but as many of you know The Black Pearl and many businesses were affected by the storm last Thursday. The new event will be a celebration of the black pearl, surviving the storm and the relaunch of the ground floor cinemas at The Light...with a working title of "After the storm".

The evening will be a community event and a fundraiser - probably for the Black Pearl and ourselves, the Momentary Art Project (we are a community interest company with 7 voluntary directors) and maybe other. We hope to use one of the screens (with kind permission from The Light) to show footage from a previous storm with live music, and use the foyer space for more activities such as music and poetry. As yet a date has not been decided upon but we will be meeting again next week.

Feel free to get in touch if you want to get involved.

Other news: Still looking for folks to tender for mural project...email MAProject@hotmail.co.uk

MAP directors Shaun and Liz managed to battle through and get some grant applications in to Love Wirral so fingers crossed and this is for an entirely different project...

We have many irons in the fire!

Tuesday 3 December 2013

Is it the end of Love the Black Pearl...NO!

Unit was planned to be open last weekend for viewing from 1 until 3pm and then the show was to come down on last Monday, making way for Winter Wonderland.....

STOP press: due to our minor flooding because of the storm that hit Marine Point last Thursday and also carried away The Black Pearl...we have decided to morph Love the Black Pearl into a winter wonderland...culminating in an evening at the Light cinema in January to celebrate the Black Pearl, the wealth of support from the community and the re-opening of the ground floor theatres. More of this later...so keep the snowflakes coming by whatever means.

UPDATE OF NEWS from MAP

We are appealing for local artists of all ages to help create a magical seasonal exhibition in the heart of the resort.  “Winter Wonderland” is the title of the exhibition and MAP is asking local people to create individual snowflakes in shades of white, pale blue and silver - from recycled materials - to be hung in the MAP gallery space between Subway and Starbucks. the Light Cinema will also play host to some of the snowflakes in their windows.

“Last year we asked residents to create sea creatures for our launch ‘Fish and Ships’ exhibition last December and they responded with enthusiasm, inventiveness, wit and artistic flair,” said MAP Chair Liz Byrne. “We are hoping that they will be equally inspired by the theme for this year’s Christmas exhibition.”

The launch of the exhibition will coincide with a celebration at The Light Cinema with carols and local musicians on Thursday, 12th December in the early evening, times and details to be confirmed. The display will run until the middle of January.

MAP exhibition open tomorrow from 11.45-12.45 Wednesday and 1-3 Saturday

“love the black pearl”

The Momentary Art Project community interest company in conjunction with The Black Pearl team called for photographic images of our new Wirral icon, The Black Pearl, a driftwood boat that has captured the imagination of old and young on the beach between Egremont and New Brighton.

Anyone with an image of The Black Pearl was asked to submit for the Momentary Art Project exhibition “love the black pearl”. The ecclectic display is viewable from the 14th November in the window of the MAP Gallery, Unit 13, Marine Point (between Subway and Starbucks) in the Neptune development in New Brighton. We have arranged some times when we will open the unit this week

MAP exhibition open tomorrow Wednesday the 20th of November from 11.45-12.45  and 1-3 Saturday the 23rd of November.

Frank Lund of The Black Pearl said of the driftwood boat and the exhibition

“When we started building the Black Pearl on a cold January weekend, she was the just the latest piece in the ongoing art project on the beach by Dalmorton Road slipway. We never expected the Pearl to last so long nor to become so loved within our community - and beyond. Over the months since that January day the Pearl has become an iconic image of New Brighton.

We often say that the Black Pearl is probably one of the most photographed subjects in the town and there is no doubt that the quality of these images and the frequency of their publication have contributed much to the fame and notoriety of the driftwood pirate ship.

Over the months, over the seasons, event by event, we have seen literally hundreds of wonderful Black Pearl images created by Wirral and Merseyside photographers and artists. But as image follows image the memory fades and it will be most rewarding to see so many of these moments in time gathered together, but briefly, in this exhibition. We, the many participants of the Black Pearl team, are certainly looking forward to this event.”

love the black pearl

"love the black pearl' is mid way through being assembled and we will launch it tomorrow night at the unit at 5.30pm, bring a strong torch as the unit is un-lit and we can explore the exhibits by torchlight...a novel solution to our situation but also useful as we hope to head to The Black Pearl itself  on the beach between New Brighton and Egremont. It seems only fitting to go and see her in all her glory by the light of many electric torches.

So please join us at Unit 13 between Subway and Starbucks at 5.30pm tomorrow, the 13th of November and then walk together (or drive and walk) to visit the old girl on the beach. Dress warm and be safe.

Love the black pearl deadline extended...

The hand-in was a little disappointing for the exhibition "love the black pearl" probably due to the dreadful weather on Saturday) so we have decided to extend the deadline. Would you mind letting everyone know that they can drop their submissions (a4 to a3 size) in to our unit between Subway and Starbucks at Marine Point development in New Brighton between 9.30 and 11.30 am this Wednesday and Thursday. Entry is £1 and the submissions need to be accompanied by an entry form...which is downloadable from our blog entry of last week

An element of change for MAP

Momentary Art Project

The 3 Elements exhibition

Friday August 2nd is the date and New Brighton is the place for the launch of the latest art exhibition organised by the Momentary Art Project (MAP) in our new location.

Set up last year by seven Wirral residents who are passionate about art and New Brighton, MAP has already brought a range of art shows to the resort. The 3 Elements exhibition, which launches at 6pm on August 2nd and can be seen in the window of our new unit in Neptune’s Marine Point development (between Morrisons and Starbucks) until the end of the month, features the work of three talented local artists and offers a snapshot of the wide range of art being created in Wirral.

Mural artist Fred Biddulph is, amongst other things, a time-served sign-writer who spent more than 20 years as a college lecturer teaching decorating, special wall finishes, graining and marbling both in London and Merseyside.  Locally he has worked with pupils to create murals in several local schools.

Take a look online for Fred's visual art http://www.paintanddec.com

Metal is the chosen medium for the second featured artist,Roy Lewis, who has been using worn engine and other mechanical parts in his work for more than 25 years.

“I have only in recent years realised that this was recycling,” commented Roy, “I was just using interesting found parts. I have, up to now, mainly made candle holders, clocks and sundials. Earlier this year, though, I was commissioned to make a bull’s head for display in a restaurant and after completing that I decided to make a stag’s head. So what’s next?”

Take a look at http://www.roylewismechanicalartist.weebly.com  for Roy

Completing the trio is contemporary glass artist Angie McCormick, who has developed a unique technique withmolten glass that results in striking yet delicate works of artthat are sewn onto a mount board and framed. Acclaimed for her exhibition at London’s Brick Lane Gallery in 2012, Angie has been commissioned by local businesses, includingMerseytravel

Her work can be seen online at www.angiemccormick.co.uk and at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead, as well as at The 3 Elements exhibition.

PS for those who are new or don't know where we are, from the train station head down hill towards the sea, hang a right on the first big road, cross the crossing after the RNLI station towards Morrisons and there we are between the supermarket and Starbucks, The Light Cinema is just around the corner.

Update for contributors

Dear contributor

Many thanks to you all for contributions to the Wirral Pride of Place Project. The exhibition will be coming down after the closing celebration this Sunday at 6pm. You are most welcome to join us to celebrate what has been achieved over the last 2 weeks. The event will start at noon, with activities planned throughout the afternoon. One of the volunteers, Shelagh, has arranged for her art club to be in attendance. She will be discussing projects like ours which involved community engagement and she is more than happy for others to join in. There will be a mass art chalk drawing for the public to draw on the pavement outside (if bad weather stops this the Light Cinema have offered us their foyer and cardboard to carry on inside) between 1.30 and 3pm and the mayor will be in attendance from 2.30pm. Local poet Eleanor Rees will be reading from her poem about a gull's journey around the Wirral Coastline and there will be music from The Singing Bowl Orchestra and Caroline England. Wine and cakes will be available and you are welcome to bring your own food and drink to share.

At the end of the day if you would like to collect your artworks and let us know you have removed them that would be most helpful. Alternatively arrange with Jan or Chris to come back on Monday afternoon from 3pm to collect them. If you are interested in donating your pieces to The Caravan Gallery archive, again talk to Jan or Chris admin@thecaravangallery.co.uk

Finally, I would like to invite you to the launch of the next exhibition "Spotlight on Wirral" by Mosslands School on the 2nd of July at 6pm. This will be our final show in this unit but never fear, the Momentary Art Project had a cunning plan and we will be coming back at a venue very close to the original as well as expanding our reach to the Floral Pavilion.

The Caravan Gallery

I have just been taking a look at Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale's book "is Britain great? 2" and found a paragraph I wanted to share with you as we gather momentum on the Wirral Pride of Place Project in our unit at Marine Point

"Caravan Gallery Britain doesn't exist in tourist brochures and marketing campaigns or grace the pages of glossy lifestyle magazines; we try to resist the lure of landmarks, must-see attractions and overpriced family fun in favour of undesignated sights and accidental diversions. We understand why 'destination' guides tend to perpetuate single-faceted rose-tinted aspirational versions of places but firmly believe in a more adventurous approach to exploration, a foray beyond sanitised homogeneity, can be equally wirthwhile" the intrepid explorer is forced to question long held stereotypical beliefs and may be rewarded with unexpected discoveries and revelations"

Launched Saturday and now over to you!

The project is open daily from 12 til 6 for everyone to join in adding their photos and views to the People's wall and complete a survey.  It will end with a closing finale on Saturday 23rd of June with the Mayor in attendance from 12 to 6pm.

WIRRAL PRIDE OF PLACE PROJECT

WIRRAL PRIDE OF PLACE PROJECT

The Caravan Gallery comes to New Brighton! 8th - 23rd JUNE

Momentary Art Project C.I.C will be opening the doors of their temporary unit in Neptune’s development at Marine Point , New Brighton to play host to The Caravan Gallery who will be transforming the empty space into a dynamic photography exhibition-cum-alternative visitor information centre exploring the identity of Wirral. A similar project is also underway in Liverpool.

The Caravan Gallery is a gallery in a caravan and mobile visual arts project set up in 2000 by Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale to take art to people and places other galleries might not easily reach. Their extensive photographic archive, publications and postcards document the reality and surreality of ‘the way we live today’. The artists have traveled thousands of miles and exhibited in hundreds of locations from supermarket car parks and contemporary art festivals to designer Paul Smith’s Space in Tokyo. Their exhibition Merseystyle: Photographs by The Caravan Gallery is currently on display at the new Museum of Liverpool and the caravan has been touring the area.

Alison Bailey Smith, one of 7 directors of the Momentary Art Project said, “Jan and Chris will initially set the scene with their own images of Wirral. They often photograph what we overlook or even ignore. In addition to their own photographs, other famous photographers - Martin Parr, Tom Wood and Ken Grant have agreed to contribute a local image to the Wirral Pride of Place Project. A selection of artists' books exploring the character of Merseyside resulting from a collaboration between students from Wirral Met College and Brigham Young University in Utah will also be on show in the space.

Visitors will be encouraged to add their own personal landmarks and observations to The People’s Map of Wirral and contribute Wirral-themed words and pictures to The People’s Wall. A creation area will be set up for people to make their own drawings, collages, postcards, souvenirs etc.

Local groups, societies and individuals are encouraged to bring along their Wirral-related creations and items for possible inclusion in the exhibition. These could include 2D and 3D artworks they have made themselves, poems, stories, photos, films, scrapbooks, old postcards, books and brochures, souvenirs, found objects and memorabilia. Items may be scanned and returned or kept until the end of the exhibition. Alternatively they can be donated to The Caravan Gallery archive. Some of the material collected may eventually appear in a commemorative publication.

The exhibition will not be completed until the final day so each will have a closing celebration where participants and visitors can admire the finished display.

MAY BLOSSOMING FOR YOUNG ARTISTS

MAY BLOSSOMING FOR YOUNG ARTISTS

Young artists are springing into action to bring a fresh look to shop windows at New Brighton’s Marine Point for three weeks in May. The students from St Mary’s Catholic College, will display their work as part of the Momentary Art Project (MAP) programme.

Featuring a range of materials, including textiles, their creations will be seen in the unit next to The Light Cinema and The Hungry Horse restaurant, until May 23.

Included in the display is the work of 17-year-old aspiring fashion designer and sixth form student at St Mary’s, Patrick McDowell. A finalist in the last season of BBC’s Young Apprentice, Patrick was memorably tipped for the top by Lord Sugar, who told him: ‘I somehow think I'm going to hear a lot about Patrick McDowell the designer, and I want you to carry on with that dream’.

To launch the event, the third in a series of MAP exhibitions, there will be a carnival evening on Thursday, 2nd May, from 6pm to 8pm, focusing on the amphitheatre area of Marine Point, close to The Light Cinema. All are welcome to join in the celebrations, which will feature a live dance and music performances, as well as a balloon race to raise money for Wirral Age UK.

The Momentary Art Project is a community interest company set up by volunteers with the aim of bringing art to and from New Brighton, while raising money for local charities.

Their next exhibition will be called 'Wirral: Pride of Place' and will run from June 8 to June 23, with The Caravan Gallery as part of the Look: Liverpool International Photography Festival.
